here is a very wide range of courses, very practical and offered right from the A ~ Z of it; all Ms packages Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc. and then also the more intricate side of it, Programming and Software development; web design; systems design and implementation; information systems and communication technologies etc.
Since we are in the Computer age, we make sure each participant does all the basics, unless they can demonstrate that they already know a lot about it then we can move on from there. This we believe will be our contribution to the improvement of computer literacy in Africa as these gadgets have been there since the 1940s especially in the US but even in other parts of the developed world, they were incorporated into their education systems very long back when here in Africa, so many are retiring now without having touched/used a computer.
One of my personal doctors, a lady from Southern Africa, surprised me in the 1990s when she told me that she did study computers as part of her medical doctor’s degree at the university of Birmingham in the UK in 1971, and I didn’t know that field of study would ever need to have used any computers in their training especially of doctors, maybe some engineers only, I thought?
But my major problem now as a seasoned educator/trainer/enlightener of others is to see that there are still so many professionals, people of the middle ages, who still don’t know how to use a computer up to this decade, and I have been complaining a lot about this time lag for us as Africans to most of our students and learners in Africa including some primary school pupils I have taught/come into contact with. Maybe this passion and zeal will help Africa one of these days to have more than 80% of its citizens at or almost at par with the developed world! It’s difficult but ours as educators/trainers is to challenge both parents and employers, especially governments to please give us those kids and employees who do not yet have the computer proficiency to ground them because who knows, maybe some of these are going to be our hidden Bill Gates’ and if we don’t do our part now they may be doomed to die with their talents not fully developed/known???
